Sibelius 6 Music Composition Software
Description
Students have been writing poetry in their Language Arts class in preparation for this Integrated Unit between Language Arts and Music teachers. Now that the students have their poems written, they will use Sibelius 6 to compose an original score using their poem as the song's lyrics. At the end of the unit students will perform their piece for the class.
Supporting Resource
Computer software such as Sibelius 6 provides students with immediate feedback aiding them in revising and improving their work, much more so than paper and pencil. This use of technology will allow the students to play back, in real time, the melodies they are writing. Research shows that students who think of learning as a step-by-step process are more willing to edit and revise their work as opposed to learners who only understand learning as rote memorization (Wiske, 2005). Sibelius 6 will allow the students to cycle through a process of write, listen, edit, and revise as they create an original score. APA Citation:

New and Innovative
The use of computer software to write music is a new and innovative technology for a school district. Students are accustomed to using paper and pencil to write melodies and demonstrate their knowledge of music. Using Sibelius 6 will allow teachers to assess student work and comment within the software - providing both teacher and student an electronic record of the student's progress.
